April 10th marks National Farm Animals Day — a holiday created to recognize the importance of compassionate, ethical, and responsible farm and livestock animal care.
From a cow’s milk to a chicken’s egg, farm animals play a significant role in providing us with many of the necessities that characterize daily life. In turn, it’s crucial that we ensure and advocate for the health, safety, and well-being of each of these animals.
In celebration of National Farm Animals Day, we’re excited to dive into the importance of sustainable farm animal nutrition.
Rendering & Sustainable Animal Nutrition
Did you know that rendered animal feed offers key proteins, minerals, vitamins, and carbohydrates that comprise a nutritious diet for poultry, fish, and livestock animals?
Sustainable, high-quality rendered animal protein is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, and essential amino acids. When utilized within livestock and farm animal feed, rendered products, including tallow, offer a clean, safe, and balanced source of nutrition that supports healthy, energized farm animals, all while contributing to improved food waste sustainability.
As a part of renderers’ compliance and dedication to quality and safety throughout our industry, strict guidelines, including those enforced by the Rendering Code of Practice (COP), are in place to protect and ensure the sustainability, uniformity, stability, and nutritional value of rendered farm animal feed — so end users are always confident in its value.
Spearheaded by the Animal Protein Producers Industry (APPI) and the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation (FPRF), extensive and ongoing research is dedicated toward ensuring sustainable farm animal nutrition within the rendering industry. From the strict and careful control of pathogens, including salmonella, to the exploration of critical ingredient utilization and sustainability insights, NARA upholds an ongoing mission of advocating for the health and safety of farm animals — a proud effort made possible by the compassion and commitment of our nation’s farmers and renderers.
For more information on the quality, safety, and sustainability of rendered livestock, poultry, and aquaculture feed, take a look at our 2025 Animal Feed Consumption Report, released in partnership with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA).
Whether through education, visiting a farm, or spreading awareness through social media, we hope you’re able to join us in recognizing the deep significance of National Farm Animals Day — today and every day.
